How You Can Manage Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a foot condition that can be caused from anything from excessive weight to improper shoes. This condition causes a lot of pain and discomfort that makes it hard for you to stand or walk when you are experiencing a flair up. The condition occurs when the plantar fascia, the long tendon that runs lengthwise along the bottom of your foot, gets injured or irritated. The best way to put an end to the suffering that comes with this problem is prevention. However, if that doesn't happen, then you want to learn about ways of minimizing the symptoms and treatment options.

Preventing plantar fasciitis occurrences

If you are overweight, then you are at a higher risk for developing a problem due to the added stress you are putting on your feet. Also, if you wear unsupportive shoes or walk around barefoot on hard surfaces, then you are putting yourself at higher risk. Spending an excessive amount standing on your feet or walking can also lead to plantar fasciitis.

Home treatments for plantar fasciitis pain

If you are experiencing pain caused by plantar fasciitis, then you will usually find it hurts you the most first thing in the morning. Therefore, you want to take extra time in the morning to gently massage your feet before attempting to get out of bed.

Keep a small-sized water bottle in your freezer at all times. When your feet hurt you can take the bottle and roll it under them for some instant relief from the pain. You can also use a frozen golf ball for this, but it can be a bit harder to keep the ball from rolling out from under your feet.

Physical therapy

When you are suffering from plantar fasciitis you may get relief by going to physical therapy. In your physical therapy sessions you may be taught stretches and exercises to help strengthen and/or loosen up the plantar fascia. You will also learn tips such as proper standing posture and other things to help decrease the chances of flair ups. In therapy, you may also be provided with massages, ultra sound and other treatments to help with the pain.

Chiropractor

Going to a chiropractor (like those at University Physical Medicine) for plantar fasciitis can also help. Sometimes the condition can be caused from improper posture and this may be due to a misalignment of your spine. In this case, the chiropractor will be able to help by properly aligning your spine and manipulating any other affected joints to help bring your feet relief.
